The adjective "Machiavellian" conjures up the image of an amoral political leader, wheeling and dealing and lying to achieve his ends. The historical figure of Niccol ̣Machiavelli would certainly not recognize that interpretation or caricature of what he wrote. We shall focus our attention on three works--The Prince, Discourses, and Florentine Histories--that will get us to the heart of what this man believed
